IELTS Reading: Skimming and Scanning Strategies

IELTS Reading is a time-pressure test. Students need to read efficiently, not slowly read every word. Two important techniques are skimming and scanning.

Skimming means reading quickly to understand the general idea of a passage. You can skim titles, topic sentences, and repeated keywords.

Scanning means looking for specific information such as names, dates, numbers, or keywords from the question. This helps you locate the part of the text where the answer may appear.

Many students waste time by reading everything in detail from the beginning. A better approach is to read the questions first, identify keywords, and then search strategically.

To improve, practice with a timer. After each test, review why your wrong answers were wrong. This will help you understand IELTS traps and question patterns.
